Spring has arrived at River Creek Stables, and it is one of the best times of year to have a horse in the barn. The pastures are greening up, the creek is running clear, and our paddocks and trails are drying out from the winter. For our boarders, that means more turnout time and miles of trail to enjoy.
More turnout, greener pastures
As the ground firms up, horses spend more time out on our turnout paddocks. Spring grass comes in fast, so we manage turnout carefully — easing horses onto fresh pasture to keep their digestion happy and prevent the problems that come from too much rich grass too quickly. If your horse is an easy keeper or prone to laminitis, talk to us about a turnout schedule that keeps them safe.
Trails are calling
Our boarders have access to more than 12 miles of creek-side, meadow, and ridge trails right from the barn door. Spring is the perfect season to leg your horse back up after winter — start with short, easy rides and build from there. The footing along the lower creek trails is especially forgiving this time of year.
Seasonal care checklist
Spring is also the season for routine health care. A few reminders for every owner:
Spring vaccinations — core vaccines and any risk-based boosters are best given before mosquito season ramps up.
Coggins testing — make sure your horse’s Coggins is current, especially if you plan to travel this year.
Farrier and dental — hooves grow faster in spring, so keep your farrier cycle on schedule and book a dental check if your horse is due.
Deworming — talk to your vet about a spring deworming plan based on a fecal egg count.
